Open Letter to Ethiopian Ministry of Foreign Affairs
This is a response to a manifesto written by the ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ethiopia entitled" Democratization anf Promotion of Tolerance: Combating Hate Groups" on March 31st 2009 on the government`s mouth piece Aiga Forum.
Before i come to the details of my opinion i want to show how the words Democratization, Tolerance and Hate are defined and later i will come to every point raised and will conclude who is instigating the hate politics, the government of Ethiopia or the Diaspora.
Democratization (British English: Democratisation) is the transition to a more democratic political regime. It may be the transition from an authoritarian regime to a full democracy or transition from a semi-authoritarian political system to a democratic political system. The outcome may be consolidated (as it was for example in the United Kingdom) or democratization may face frequent reversals (as it has faced for example in Argentina). Different patterns of democratization are often used to explain other political phenomena, such as whether a country goes to a war or whether its economy grows. Democratization itself is influenced by various factors, including economic development, history, and civil society.
Toleration and tolerance are terms used in social, cultural and religious contexts to describe attitudes which are "tolerant" (or moderately respectful) of practices or group memberships that may be disapproved of by those in the majority. In practice, "tolerance" indicates support for practices that prohibit ethnic and religious discrimination. Conversely, 'intolerance' may be used to refer to the discriminatory practices sought to be prohibited.
Hatred (or hate) is a word that describes intense feelings of dislike. It can be used in a wide variety of contexts, from hatred of inanimate objects (e.g. vegetables) to hatred of other people, or even entire groups of people
Clearing the context of the words used by the Foreign Minister i will try to substantiate my foundings and since i am the citzen of the country as well have worked atleast with TPLF led government as well the Junta government i can bring some issue where they are relevant to show what a crap is put in the manifesto of the foreign office.
As indicated above Democratization is about transition to a more democratic political regime but as to the TPLF led EPRDF government it is excercised as repression,tyranny,extra-judicial killing,mass massacre (Anuak),imprisonment of journalists for writing their views,and administering with a hard hand. Besides desrespect of human rights,disrespect of press freedom, disrespect of freedom of association and organization unless blessed by the ruling party. If these are the practice to democratize a country we have to undemocratize it to come to the envied democratic rule.
Since i was working in one of the regional state,i will try to describe who run the regional state, that is there are between 5-7 members of the ruling party in those regions where the party has not upper hand or stooges and these group is responsiblle for decision making while the signature is done by the regional president. If the regional president or his vice do not work accordingly they will be move outright with the mechanism called evaluation which focus to label them and perform a coup d`etate (to name some of this hidden forces i only focus on the team leader Bitew Belay for Southern, Asgedom Kahsay for Assosa, Yohanes for Gambella, Melaku Fanta for Afar,Moges Abrha for Somali 1996-1999).These are the realities what you want the world about democratization?
Democratization is about abolishing totalitarianism or semitotalitarianism but let we look the following scenario:
01• Meles Zenawi Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF) chairman, TPLF Politburo chairman, Ethiopian Peoples' Revolutionary Democratic Front (EPRDF) chairman, and Prime Minister.
02• Azeb Mesfin (Meles Zenawi's wife)
former head of Mega Enterprises, currently a member of parliament and chairperson of the Social Affairs Committee.
03• Sebhat Nega TPLF Politburo member, Meles Zenawi's personal advisor, behind the scene controls the Endowment Fund For Rehabilitation of Tigray (EFFORT), an NGO in name, but a TPLF business conglomerate in realty, controlling some of the largest industries in the country
04• Kidusan Nega (Sebhat Nega's sister)
Mekele Mayor and TPLF Central Committee member.
05• Tsegay Berhe (Kidusan Nega's husband) Tigray Killil president and TPLF Politburo member
06• Aberash Nega (Sebhat Nega's sister) Ran for Addis Ababa City Council in May election (with her two cousins) but not elected.
07• Arkebe Okubay (whose sister is the wife of TPLF Central Committee member Adis Alem Balema) a member of the TPLF Politburo, an advisor to Meles Zenawi, and former Mayor of Addis Ababa
08• Berhane Gebre Kristos (brother of Arkebe Okubay's wife Nigist Gebre Kristos)
TPLF Central Committee member, former Ambassador to the USA and current Ambassador to Brussels, Belgium.
09• Tirufat Kidane Mariam (Abay Woldu's wife) Meles Zenawi's justice and security chief, and TPLF Central Committee member.
10• Abay Woldu (Turufat Kidane Mariam's husband) a TPLF Politburo member
11• Mulugeta Alemseged Meles Zenawi's nearest family member, Meles Zenawi's security chief and personal body guard
12• General Berhane Negas Meles Zenawi's palace security chief and the Godfather of Meles Zenawi's daughter
13. Seyoum Mesfin Minister, Ministry of Foreign Affairs,TPLF polit bureau
14. General Samora Yunus posted highest rank in ministry of defence
Is democratization collecting one party members at all level of the administaration and controlling key government positions? Or as i discussed above this is the main feauture of a totalitarian government which do not beleieve its own people or ownself that moving in the right direction and try to consolidate power in the hand of few who are loyal and related to onself.
Basically democratization, good governance and tolerans are related and interdependable but what is practice in that country is based on hate politics instigated by the ruling party by lebelling those who have visions and strategies other than the god of the country, here only TPLF led EPRDF. As is written in the bible do not worship other than me if you do so you are against me and i will curse and burn you is the motto you follow.
When we talk about promotion of tolerance as far as i understand is one way of conflict resolution or opening a fora to discuss ideas within different groups or parties so that to convience the audience( Ethiopians) and leave the judgement to the audience. What i learn and see is the other way round such as proclaiming curfews and producing decrees so that no other parties are able to organize themselves or conduct conferences or symposiums without the blessing of the ruling party. Moreover to put the whole excecutive committee of an opposition party in prison and suing them with genocide,treason and cause for loss of life while the ruling party militia,comandos and police committed could not be tolerated as tolerance but arrogance.
To ameliorate such tyrant repression some group have to tell the world the out cry of the Ethiopian people and here comes the role of the Diaspora and as to me before crying out one must clean his own plate and respect its own constitution and respect the constitution which is just an alphabet since the first day it is printed and to demonstrate for such noble ideas should have not been labelled as Holiganism but the act done by your representative in London to only call meeting who are Ethiopians not Ethiopians. That shows we need a new proclamation to define who is Ethiopian. As per the letter of the London Ethiopian Embassy,Ethiopian is the one who breaths with the lungs of TPLF led EPRDF or a person who bow and think Meles Zenawi is the spritual leader of all Ethiopians and the sect who do not bow to that are not Ethiopians or the job discription of the Embassy have to be changed in name or in words.
The above situation clearly show us who instigate division between one Ethiopian and another which will sow hatered with a nation but what a white lie again stated on the letter was that qouting about international law may be i am not sure a single law signed by the country is not respected and try to emphasis others to respect them when it is for their sake. This is Gimel Seko agonbso.
The other issue raised is that the emphasis to community associations and other groups to isolate these elements what here show me is that as i discussed above if not with us allienate them which equals hate them, tolerance is to convince people but not allienate and leave them.
In conclusion as far as i clearly saw is that one do not have to define to differerence in ideas as hate which rediculed me after all everybody loves his country and would not want to see to be destroyed by a totalitarian regime.
